If you want coverage down the sides, add the side drop to each dimension. It’s straightforward arithmetic, and if you’re not sure, rounding up slightly is almost always the right call.
For irregular shapes, a sketch is worth more than a complex description. A rough hand drawing with key dimensions marked — overall length, width at the widest and narrowest points, any angles or cutouts — gives a manufacturer everything they need to understand the requirement. You don’t need CAD drawings or technical specifications. A photo of the area or object being covered, combined with a sketch with measurements, is plenty.
For applications with specific attachment requirements — a structure with fixed anchor points, a vehicle with particular rail positions, an existing frame with set dimensions — note the positions of those anchor points as part of the brief. This is the information that determines eyelet and D-ring placement, and getting it right means the finished tarp installs correctly the first time.
When in doubt about any measurement or specification, the simple rule is to provide as much information as you can and ask.
